Change

Everything that seems to us imperishable tends towards decay; a position in society, like anything else, is not created once and for all, but, just as much as the power of an empire, is continually rebuilding itself by a sort of perpetual process of creation, which explains the apparent anomalies in social or political history in the course of half a century. The creation of the world did not occur at the beginning of time, it occurs every day.

The Fugitive 5: 909

Albertine disparue 4: 247-48

What one calls an earlier time is the period of which one has oneself known only the end: things that we see on the horizon assume a mysterious grandeur and seem to us to be closing over a world which we shall not behold again; but meanwhile we are advancing, and very soon it is we ourselves who are on the horizon for the generations that come after us; all the while the horizon retreats into the distance, and the world, which seemed to be finished, begins again.

Time Regained 6: 349

Thus it is that the pattern of the things of this world changes, that centres of empire, assessments of wealth, letters patent of social prestige, all that seemed to be forever fixed is constantly being re-fashioned, so that the eyes of a man who has lived can contemplate the most total transformation exactly where change would have seemed to him to be most impossible.

Time Regained 6: 486

The world is not created once and for all for each of us individually. There are added to it in the course of our lives things of which we have never had any suspicion.

The Fugitive 5: 642

Albertine disparue 4: 58

Change and desire

We believe that we can change the things around us in accordance with our desires—we believe it because otherwise we can see no favorable outcome. We do not think of the outcome which generally comes to pass and is also favorable; we do not succeed in changing things in accordance with our desire, but gradually our desires change. The situation that we hoped to change because it was intolerable becomes unimportant to us. We have failed to surmount the obstacle, as we were absolutely determined to do, but life has taken us round it, led us beyond it, and then if we turn round to gave into the distance of the past, we can barely see it, so imperceptible has it become.

The Fugitive 5: 609

Albertine disparue 4: 35

Character

The character which a man exhibits in the latter half of his life is not always, though it often is, his original character developed or withered, attenuated or enlarged; it is sometimes the exact reverse, like a garment that has been turned.

Within a Budding Grove 2: 4-5

Conversation

We imagine always when we speak that it is our own ears, our own mind, that are listening.

Within a Budding Grove 2: 257

Conversation and its hidden subtleties

...among the multiplicity of gestures, remarks, little incidents that go to make up a conversation, it is inevitable that we should pass (without noticing anything that attracts our attention) close by those that hide a truth for which our suspicions are blindly searching, whereas we stop to examine others beneath which nothing lies concealed.

Swann's Way 1: 397-98

Countries of which we dream

Even from the simplest, the most realistic point of view, the countries which we long for occupy, at any given moment, a far larger place in our actual life than the country in which we happen to be.

Swann's Way 1: 555

Critics

The critics of each generation confine themselves to maintaining the direct opposite of the truths acknowledged by their predecessors.

The Guermantes Way 3: 643
